Household Hazardous Waste Services

Many of our facilities accept certain items that are classified as Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). These items, discarded from a residential household, may be reactive, toxic, explosive, or corrosive may fall into this classification. We are committed to the communities we serve to safely handle and dispose of these materials.

Hazardous Waste generated from a Commercial or Business source must have a Hazardous Waste Account established with the Material Recovery Facility and will be charged. Vehicles with a company logo will be seen as commercial Hazmat and will require a commercial account.

Due to capacity limitations, residents of El Dorado County may bring up to 15 gallons in 5 gallon or smaller size containers or 125 pounds (combined total) of hazardous waste in one trip, per hazardous waste day, per vehicle/person. Household Hazardous Waste can be dropped off Friday - Sunday from 9:00am - 4:00pm for free. Household hazardous waste will be closed when attendants tentatively take breaks at 10am, 2pm, and lunch between 12 - 12:30pm. Break & lunch times may vary depending on situations and there could be a wait during those times. Customers must remain in vehicle, attendant will assist with removal of hazardous waste.

Please be aware pursuant to Department of Toxic Substances Control Statues and Regulations households may self-transport up to 5 gallons or 50 pounds of HHW to an approved HHW Collection Facility. The local administering agency may elect to increase this quantity under specified conditions, to 15 gallons or 125 pounds (HSC 25218-5.1) https://dtsc.ca.gov/universalwaste/managing-household-hazardous-wastes/

Incorrect Battery Disposal Can Cause Fires

Common household items are convenient and generally safe, however, the batteries in them pose risks when disposed of in regular garbage or recycling containers - because of their highly flammable nature. Never toss them in curbside cans. It's a matter of safety!
