Mandatory recycling of organic waste is the next step toward achieving California’s aggressive recycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission goals.
January 1, 2020 businesses that generate 2 cubic yards or more of commercial mixed waste per week are currently required arrange for organic waste recycling services.

Who determines if you are an organic recycling candidate or not?

AB 1826 requires that commercial businesses with 2 cubic yards of combined garbage and recycling service per week need to divert their organic material. My business is a multi-family property – are we required to divert organic waste?

Multi-family properties with five units or more are required to divert landscaping waste. Multi-family properties have been notified about this requirement and have been asked to respond to a survey. If you have not responded to the landscaping waste survey, please email El Dorado Disposal’s Education and Outreach Coordinator: cadie.bandy@wasteconnections.com.
What kinds of organic materials are accepted in organics recycling program? Is there a list of acceptable items?

Our program allows food this includes all vegetables, fruits, meat, bones, dairy, coffee grounds/filters and egg shells; Food soiled paper products are also allowed in the Food Waste program including napkins, paper plates, and wax covered cardboard products. If your business decides to use collect this food waste in bags we will only allow BPI approved GREEN biodegradable bags. Please see the downloadable food waste flyer to see all acceptable materials.
Are Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) certified compostable single-use foodservice ware products accepted?

Our program does allow BPI approved GREEN biodegradable bags. We will not accept any biodegradable single use utensils or straws.
Is the use of compostable bags for collecting organic material allowed?

Yes, we do allow BPI Approved GREEN biodegratable bags. We recommend our “bucket to bin” method, which means collecting food waste in our free 4 gallon buckets and transferring the food waste into the dumpster. Send an email to El Dorado Disposal’s Education and Outreach Coordinator, cadie.bandy@wasteconnections.com , if your business would like labeled buckets or additional technical collection assistance.
Are compostable paper products permitted?

Yes, we do allow food soiled paper products including napkins, paper towels, paper plates, and wax cardboard items.
What is the range of container sizes that can be provided for collecting organic material?

We collect in 35 gallon containers, 1 yard bins, and 2 yard bins.
What is the minimum and maximum frequency of organics collection?
▸
Minimum is once a week collection. Maximum is three times a week collection. We recommend three times a week collection.
Will a representative be available to do a walk-through to assess the workplace for organics recycling?

Yes, site visits are recommended before starting an organics collection program. Please contact El Dorado Disposal’s Education and Outreach Coordinator, cadie.bandy@wasteconnections.com, to arrange a visit.
What other organics-related services are offered (signage, staff training, waste audits, indoor bins, etc.)?

We offer free printed flyers and posters in English and Spanish for Food Waste, Recycling, and Garbage along with our labeled 4-gallon buckets for internal food waste collection. Site visits, staff trainings, and technical assistance are also available. Contact El Dorado Disposal’s Education and Outreach Coordinator, cadie.bandy@wasteconnections.com, to arrange for any of these services.
We recommend the customer contact us before construction. This eliminates any confusion. Each business is unique and it serves best to meet and discuss options before construction of the enclosure. Call our customer service department at 530-626-4141.
