Commercial Organic Waste
New! Mandatory Commercial Organics Collection AB 1826
Include the food! California disposes approximately 30 million tons of waste in landfills each year, of which more than 30 percent could be used for compost or mulch. Mandatory recycling of organic waste is the next step toward achieving California’s aggressive recycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission goals.
All commercial businesses generating 4 or more cubic yards of organic waste per week are currently required to set up organics recycling service.
Plan ahead! Starting January 1, 2019 businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of commercial solid waste per week shall arrange for organic waste recycling services.
- This will include most restaurants with more than 26 employees, most grocery stores, most chain sit down restaurants and most chain fast food
- *Note: Multifamily dwellings are not required to have a food waste diversion program,* but will need to provide information about their landscape and green waste programs to our sustainability coordinator email@example.com
Setting up an organics collection program easy! Contact customer service at 530-626-4141 or email our sustainability coordinator firstname.lastname@example.org to get started.

Send an email to El Dorado Disposal’s sustainability coordinator: firstname.lastname@example.org. Your business may qualify for an exemption.
Multi-family properties with five units or more are required to divert landscaping waste, but not food waste. Multi-family properties have been notified about this requirement and have been asked to respond to a survey. If you have not responded to the landscaping waste survey, please email El Dorado Disposal’s sustainability coordinator: email@example.com
Our program is food only--this includes all meat, bones, and egg shells. Golden rule: if it goes in your mouth, it goes in the bin. Please see the downloadable food waste flyer to see all acceptable materials.
Currently our program does not accept any biodegradable foodservice products, including bags and utensils.
No. We run a bag-less collection which means that all food needs to go clean into the dumpster. We recommend our “bucket to bin” method, which means collecting food waste in our free 4 gallon buckets and transferring the food waste into the dumpster. Send an email to El Dorado Disposal’s sustainability coordinator, firstname.lastname@example.org, if your business would like labeled buckets or additional technical collection assistance.
Only coffee filters and tea bags are allowed. Please no used napkins or paper towels.
We collect in 35 gallon containers, 1 yard plastic dumpsters, and 2 yard steel dumpsters.
Minimum is once a week collection. Maximum is three times a week collection. We recommend three times a week collection.
